The quest is over for QSR's and convenience stores that have been seeking a domestically made, consumer acceptable, compostable, natural fiber hot drink cup lid.
For years the QSR's and convenience store operators of Canada have been searching for a compostable, natural fiber hot drink cup lid...one that performs for consumers just like the plastic lids that they have been trying to replace to enhance packaging sustainability. Now SustainaLid Canada has engineered just such a lid and is preparing to produce it in the hundreds of millions in a new, state-of-the-art facility in southwestern Ontario.

SustainaLid Canada Ltd. will install, own, and operate the first industry scaled output, molded fiber manufacturing facility in the Western Hemisphere dedicated to producing compostable, natural cellulose fiber take-out hot drink cup lids.... SustainaLids. SustainaLids have been engineered and proven to replicate the performance of plastic lids in terms of fit to cup, rigidity over time when exposed to hot water and oil-based liquids, and external stain resistance. Priced to be reasonably competitive with plastic lids, SustainaLids will be primarily intended for the Canadian quick serve restaurant (QSR), convenience store, and food service distribution markets. The first SustainaLid plant is to be located in southwestern Ontario and to open in mid-2027. This highly advanced and efficient facility will initially produce ~500 million high performance, economical hot drink cup lids per year and is planned to expand to produce ~1 billion cup lids per year by 2029. Custom lid design with branding is offered under long-term off-take agreements. Canadian commodity paper pulp fibers will be solely used in the production of SustainaLid Canada molded fiber products.
Plastic take-out drink cup lids are a major contributor to the global plastic pollution crisis. It is estimated that over 100 billion of these lids are used and thrown out every year…never to be recycled…in North America alone. Of these lids it is estimated that approximately 35 billion are used to cover hot coffee, tea, and cocoa drinks...and it is these lids that are most desired to be made from natural, compostable fiber instead of plastic. The reason for this is that today almost all take-out hot drink cups are made from natural fiber, and the food service industry wishes to have a natural fiber hot drink cup lid to fit to their natural fiber hot drink cups. This will make a truly "total sustainable package" in that the cup and lid would be both readily recyclable and compostable...a major step forward for the environment considering the sheer numbers involved.
